MIT’s new President L. Rafael Reif, in his recent inaugural address, stated that new educational technology being developed will be “Higher Education’s most profound technological transformation in more than 500 years.”

Educational organizations of all types (university, K-12, governmental, corporate, non-profits) are eager to find the most efficient and effective way to bring learning on-line to take advantage of the ubiquity of the Internet and the explosion of mobile media devices. There are thousands of educators experimenting with or implementing lecture capture, lecture preparation, performance capture, “flipped” classrooms and “learning labs”, in addition to already well-established programs in distance-education and on-line learning. New initiatives such as EdX at MIT and Harvard, and new companies such as Coursera and Udacity are offering on- line courses to fill this need.
